Upgraded My Fortuner’s Audio Setup – A Dream System Built with Passion
Sorry- long post alert!!!
Ever since I got my Toyota Fortuner Sigma 4 (2025 model), I felt the need to upgrade the stock JBL audio system. As someone who truly enjoys music during drives, I wanted something much better – not just louder, but cleaner, richer, and more detailed. The stock JBL 9 speaker set up was an utter disappointment. I love listening to melodies and classicals but also enjoy energetic music occasionally. This post is about the journey, the decisions, and how it all came together.
The Plan
Right from the start, I knew I didn’t want just any audio upgrade. I wanted sound quality (SQ) – something that made vocals clearer, instruments more real, and the overall experience more enjoyable. I wasn’t after thumping bass or party sound – just clean, natural music. I also wanted the system to be capable of handling other genres occasionally.
One brand that really caught my attention was Focal. I had heard great things about their speakers, and I somehow just felt they were right for me. So I decided early on – Focal it is.
Finding the Right Installer
That’s when I connected with Sandeep R Iyer (Sandy) from Advanced Automotive Professionals in HSR layout. I had done my PPF and sunfilm installation from the same agency earlier, and the trust factor was there especially with the proprietor Avinash. Sandy was Aviansh’s partner and a car audio expert. He explained everything in simple terms, involved Focal’s team for guidance, and was engaging me with equal passion and excitement. He was extremely patient with me answering all my queries and accommodating the numerous changes brough in over a period of two weeks. That really gave me confidence. I was also following motorconcept, a Delhi based installer, whose vlogs were incredibly informative. At one point I had half a mind to drive to Delhi to visit him
Key Decisions
Speakers: We went with Focal 165 AS3 3-way components in the front and Focal 165 AS 2-way components in the rear. These speakers sound amazing – clear vocals, great detail, and very natural sound. I wasn’t very sure of which series to select or going for a 3 way audio, but Sandy after consultations with Focal team came up with this suggestion of Focal’s Access series. I had my eyes on the costlier Flax series, which is Made in France, but dropped it because of the significant cost increase.
Head Unit: I initially thought of an Android Aura HU, but eventually went with the Pioneer DMH-AP6650BT. It’s simple, reliable, gives a strong 4V output, and works great with my 360 camera and other OEM features. There were costlier options available in Pioneer and Alpine, but since I have missed my budget targets by a mile, chose this model, with Sandy’s advice.
Amplifier/DSP: I was advised to try Goldhorn 810 SE, but I didn’t want to take a chance with lesser-known brands. As a matter of principle, I don’t use Chinese brands. We finally chose the Audison Forza 8.14 AMP with DSP, which has amazing tuning capabilities and is a trusted name in the SQ world. Masconis options were also considered, then went with Audison as its undoubtedly the king of this segment, though it costed significantly more than the original proposal.
Subwoofer: I wasn’t planning on a subwoofer at first. But once the system was almost done, I realized that the lower end felt a bit light. So, in a last-minute change, we added the Audison APBX-10 AS2. Now the sound feels complete – tight, punchy bass without being too much.
Damping: This was a very important part. I considered cheaper damping materials but finally went with Dr Artex for all four doors and full flooring. It has made a huge difference – road noise is almost gone, and the cabin feels much quieter. Music sounds even better because of that.
Installation Experience
Sandy and his team did a fantastic job. Every wire was neatly laid, all panels were carefully handled, and nothing feels forced or out of place. The car still looks completely stock – but the sound is on a whole different level now.
Final Thoughts
Yes, I ended up going over my original budget – by a lot, actually. But I don’t regret it one bit. The sound quality is exactly what I wanted, and I’ve learned so much through this journey.
A big shoutout to Sandy at Advanced Automotive Professionals . His attention to detail, willingness to explain things, and passion for great sound made all the difference. I’d highly recommend him if you’re planning a proper SQ setup.
