Digital sound processors (DSPs) have become very affordable–now under $199 from manufacturers like B2 Audio and Down4Sound–attracting new DSP customers.
Many of these customers will have purchased their products online, and may not possess the necessary training on how to use them properly.
A quick YouTube search reveals nearly 125,000 combined views for basic DSP tutorials. These numbers show an audience seeking training. And since many YouTube videos don’t offer the comprehensive instruction required, this opens up an opportunity for retailers.
The Solution: Monetize Your Expertise
Why not offer DSP training in your local area and market it online to these DIY customers and Facebook groups? This is not a new concept. Bryan Schmitt of Mobile Solutions already offers paid training to enthusiasts willing to learn. Doug Dobson, prior to joining Rockford Fosgate, held in-person DSP training sessions for various Facebook sound quality groups.
The home audio industry has figured this out. Many home audio stores hold paid weekend workshops for local enthusiasts, covering topics like setting up music servers or converting vinyl records to digital formats.
Why This Works for Car Audio Retailers
Many car audio DIY enthusiasts own a DSP, but don’t fully understand how to use time alignment, crossovers, or other advanced features. By hosting educational events at your store, you can:
- Attract qualified customers – Car audio enthusiasts with disposable income are drawn to your shop
- Showcase your inventory – Demonstrate new, improved, or upgraded products
- Highlight your services – Show off your tuning capabilities and professional tools
- Generate revenue from training– Charge a fee for your training
- Leverage social media – Use Facebook to identify and target groups focused on home/car audio, SPL competitions, digital music, or car meetups
- Remarket this audience – By collecting emails or social media info, you can send attendees product updates, sound competition information, or even offer a second training on other topics
Turn Your Investment Into Income
Your business has likely invested in KnowledgeFest attendance, manufacturer training programs, or workshops like those offered by Mobile Solutions. These educational investments can now generate additional revenue streams for your business while building customer relationships.
The DIY market isn’t going away. Smart retailers will find ways to serve this community while bringing them back into the fold – and getting paid to do it.
